The Legacy of Sovereign Joy

The Legacy of Sovereign Joy

The Legacy of Sovereign Joy is written by John Piper, one of the first biographies on "heroes" of the Christian faith that I have read.
This is a good introduction to the 3 great figures in Church history, Augustine, Martin Luther and John Calvin. The strength of the book is the ability of John Piper to be concise, and unwilling to paint rosy picture of the christians. He shows clearly the strengths and weaknesses of these great Christians. In so much of the Hero worship culture that we live in, it is good to know that they are Christians who too struggle with their sins.

This would be a good book for people to have a good introduction to them, a brief knowledge of them, their lives and their significant in the history of the church. After reading this, go to more in depth books about the individuals.

2 quotes, to leave behind:

"The sum of all our goods, and our perfect good, is God.
We must not fall short of this, nor seek anything beyond it;
the first is dangerous, the other impossible"  -- Augustine

"Our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee, O Lord" -- Augustine
